When Death Occurs: Steps to Take
When faced with a death, it is crucial to promptly inform the appropriate individuals. The first step is to call a doctor who can examine and verify the cause of death. If the cause of death is known and attributed to natural causes, the doctor will certify the death and electronically submit the information to the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA).
Next, the family should register the death on mylegacy.life.gov.sg. Once the registration is complete, the Cause of Death (CCOD) document will be retained by the death registration center, and a Death Certificate will be issued to the family members. This Death Certificate is essential for placing an obituary in newspapers, engaging a professional funeral director, and making arrangements for cremation or burial.
Pre-Planning and Will Writing Services
Planning for a funeral is never an easy task, both for individuals and families. However, in Singapore, it has become increasingly common for families to engage in pre-funeral planning. This option allows family members to consider and make arrangements for their loved ones’ funeral in advance. Similar to creating a Will, pre-funeral planning serves as a final testament, allowing individuals to express their wishes and provide guidance to their family members.
Moreover, pre-funeral planning can be valuable for individuals who are single and do not have immediate next-of-kin. It offers a responsible approach to demonstrate care and appreciation for their loved ones, ensuring that their wishes are fulfilled when the time comes. By engaging in pre-funeral planning, individuals can ease the burden on their family members during a difficult period and ensure that their funeral arrangements align with their desires.

Fortunately, there are numerous resources available to support families during this time. Both government social care centers and private organizations offer professional services to help individuals and families manage their grief. These organizations provide a range of resources and support systems that the family can explore to find the assistance they need in navigating their grief and finding solace.
Plan Ahead
Pre-Planning is a wise practice that is becoming increasingly accepted and appreciated nowadays. It is like making a Will, representing our last testament to our family and executing our wish list. Most importantly, our family is spared the hassle of engaging a funeral director to arrange the funeral and the financial burden of bearing the funeral expenses, especially during a time of grief and great emotional stress.
